IF I WERE…: 10 [-1] things I would do (would you do?) if I (you) were in someone else’s shoes!

I dedicate this article to the topic (very interesting for me) of “If I were…”: what would I do in another person’s shoes?
They are ideas/advice/conclusions deriving from aspects of everyday life that I have seen/experienced in person and that everyone can verify and, possibly, agree or disagree.

1. Minister of Education

Things would be many but, in a period like this, one of the innovations that I would introduce from the early years of italian school is the study of the bases of law. First of all the public one, maybe even something private. This is demonstrated by this period in which decrees, elections of various kinds as well as the signing of contracts are the masters. Are we so sure that even highly qualified people in the school/work environment understand all the operations exposed daily by the law?

2. Retired

If I were a retiree I would try to inform myself every day about what is happening even critically. Get informed in the sense of trying to understand and not rely on the classic phrase: “He/She/It/They said it…”. In many cases, a source of undoubted authority!
Also because the “excuse” of not doing it, many times, is justified by the fact that they seem to have worked (a lot) in life. Are we so sure that this is the reality?

3. Religious authority

If I were… a religious authority of any kind, I would invite those who listen to me to do the same with people more or less close to them. This is because, at times, it happens that the latter have already previously exposed the same explanations to situations of ordinary life without being listened to in the least.

4. Boomer

If I were… a boomer, first I would go in search of the true definition of the word so as to understand many things about the meaning of this word.

5. If I were… on TV

In this circumstance, I would advise the various TV characters to use simple and commonly used words given the target audience. This is because, already I, who have had the good fortune/skill to study, sometimes find it hard to understand certain terms and I have to go and check the meaning. The risk is that the viewer ends up paying attention to the cell phone or begins to observe how those who are intervening in the program are dressed simply because they cannot understand. And this is true not only on TV but, in general, in contact with the public. Could it be that talking and communicating are not the same thing?

6. Primary school teacher

If I were … a primary school teacher, I would do exactly what the teachers have done with me since the first years of primary school: teach Italian and arithmetic well. There is little to argue but the basis of grammar as well as the numerical calculation (perhaps in mind) that are used every day derive from there.

7. Graduated in psychology/sociology or similar

In this case I would deepen my studies with trips to understand how it works in other parts of the world with cultures, languages, religions different from ours. This is because, as in all disciplines learned on books, then in reality one can (and must!) increase one’s wealth of experiences/skills. I would do it, above all, if I were a person who then has to decide the career fate of other people, such as, for example, through interviews. Isn’t the unwritten rule that the more you travel, the more you can understand people’s heads and behaviors?

8. Employee in a public administration office

In this case, as in the previous ones, I would always try to increase my skills. This is because, it happened to me many times to hear the phrase: “Poor, the laws are always changed, how do they stay up to date from one day to the next?” Simple: inquiring even on your own. Why don’t employees keep track of the latest changes in the private sector? Perhaps point 1 of this article is also clearer now. Furthermore, I would consider myself lucky that my job includes 40 hours (in some cases even less for old contracts) remembering that there are many other jobs that require many more (and, sometimes, unfortunately, even less paid).

Without forgetting the people who think they deserve a raise because they have been in that job for a long time: but do you have to pay for skills or seniority in the workplace?
The answer seems obvious to me or maybe not…

9. If I were… manager of a company

In this case the sentence is not mine but I am in complete agreement. This was said by a guest during my contract on Costa neoClassica who waited for his turn in the queue at the tour office and after seeing/understanding our work on board exclaimed: “I waited in line only to compliment you! If I were a manager of a company, I would hire you immediately without staying there to do so many interviews to look for staff “. 10. Minister of Labor

Connecting to the previous point, in this case, I would like to review the decrees on refreshments/support (issued during the pandemic) which did not consider maritime workers as employees of tourism or seasonal employees.
Also because most of the people to whom I tell this thing do not understand me and, therefore, we return again to point 1 of the article.

If I were… I absolutely wouldn’t do this!

And there comes also the time to write the thing that I absolutely would not do. Well, it’s simple: if I were a reader of this article, I would try to deepen my knowledge by reading the other articles on the blog as well. So, the thing I absolutely would not do is leave the blog.
