In this article I’ll tell you about the stop at Meteora during the journey to discover Greece and Turkey both with and without a cruise.

How to reach the Meteora Monasteries?

After exploring the island of Aegina (Αίγινα) (find out the article here) and returning by ferry to Piraeus to take the train “From Athens to Kalambaka with Hellenic Train” (find out the article here), I reached Kalambaka (Καλαμπάκα) (find out the article here), closest support city for this destination.

First part of the itinerary

After leaving the city of Kalambaka (Καλαμπάκα) and passing the town of Kastraki (Καστράκι), I started walking on the road to the left of the main one to reach the statue of Thymios Vlachavas and, continuing, the Holy Church of Panagia Kanaliotissa (Ιερός Ναός Παναγ ίας Καναλιωτισσας) and the monastery nearby.

Returning to the main road, I immediately saw in front of me, looking upwards, the Agios Nikolaos Monastery (Ιερά Μονή Αγίου Νικολάου Αναπαυσά Μετεώρων) (find out the article here).
At this point I decided to continue along the asphalt road also used by cars and I reached the two monasteries that could be seen in the distance: Varlaam Monastery (Ιερά Μονή Βαρλαάμ) (find out the article here) and Great Meteora Monastery (Ιερά Μονή Μεγάλου Μετε ώρου – Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος) (find out the article here) which it is balanced precariously on a rock formation.

Admiring the surrounding landscape

Resuming the journey with some downhill stretches, I reached the main observation platform of Meteora (Κύρια Εξέδρα Παρατήρησης Μετεώρων) (find out the article here) in order to obtain interesting views from different positions of the viewpoint.

From monastery to monastery in Meteora

As we continued the day around monasteries, I would also have liked to go and see the Chapel of the Ascension of Christ (Ανάληψη του Χριστού) but it wasn’t possible.
Then I continued the walk admiring on my right the Aghia Triada Monastery (Ιερά Μονή Αγίας Τριάδος Μετεώρων) (find out the article here), a historic monument reachable by means of a long staircase and located on a rocky ridge which offers incredible views, and then continued and met the Agios Stefanos Monastery (Ιερά Μονή Αγίου Στεφάνου) (find out the article here), accessible by a small bridge.
At that point I went back for a while and then turned right and began the long descent towards Kalambaka (Καλαμπάκα).
