Today’s article concerns a topic that is often in fashion, namely that of the retiree (retired).

It’s not about pensions but…

This is not a paper on economics or politics on the (often on fire) subject of pensions but a point of view in the use of the term in everyday life. Whether you are at the supermarket, at the bar or on a construction site, the gist of the matter doesn’t change.

Elderly is not good

Starting from trying to understand at what age a person passes from adult to elderly, daily life as well as traveling has taught me that the term elderly is not so “safe”. In what sense? The answer is simple. Using this term to mean a particular person (or a group of them) in a speech, the term can be misleading. This derives from the fact that the 70-year-old on duty think of those aged 80 and over, an 80-year-old think of those over 90 and so on.

Old absolutely not

Absolutely not to use the term old for a person of a certain age. It’s known that this term is often associated with wisdom but, in any case, it’s not to be considered a good way of expressing itself. It might be fine when you’re talking about a book with a few years/decades behind it.

Retired: the exact term!

The exact term to use is retiree! It includes both the previous phrases and a reference audience certainly no less than the previous ones.

Here is the right term to not make a bad impression when talking :)
